covered in smog

girl says that quite honestly
she would rather shop

in a cramped, crowded bus
a new experience

knows there are foreigners here
no more confused stares

out of paper
I try to compose
a four line tanka

the gaze of five stars

like the waters of that clear
crystal far-away spring

Thankyou to ~SOLARTS and `Laurence55 for all their help with my last poetry. Though advice with these will also be greatly appreciated, please dont expect any improvements this series, and i might not manage to reply. Im in China, and the internet access is not so good. Any advice, therefore, shall be kept in mind for future writing, and this series shall be added to throughout my stay.

Notes:
1. Both Beijing and Jinan are architecturally wonderful, but it is often hard to see very far ahead due to the heavy smog. Even when it is sunny, the sky remains grey.

2. Based on all the old "Confuscius says" jokes. Not all of the exchange group are as geeky about culture as me.

3. Traffic jams (and traffic accidents) are constant, and often you could get to your destination faster by walking.

4. Pretty much self explanatory.

5. The busses are so overcrowded its ridiculous. But one of the students at my exchange partner's school offered me her seat - Chivalry is not dead!

6. As my exchange group seem to be the only non-chinese people in the town, we attract a lot of attention (with people literally stopping their cars and staring open mouthed). I thought it had calmed down. Literally 5 minutes after i wrote this, a boy of about three was so excited to see me that he started waving and blowing kisses while his parents laughed and waved.

7. Uh.. bad planning on my part, as I'm used to writing on a computer! More paper in my diary

8. The Chinese flag is displayed everywhere here, especially factories and traditional-style buildings.

9. Classes in a foreign language are very confusing, especially if you don't speak it.

10. There isn't often sun while I've been here, but when it has shone the whole city has been transformed.

11. The English girls on the exchange keep being asked questions about the differences between China and England, and I had to give a talk to her class about school.

12. Watching the morning exercises is just amazing. Row after row of people, all moving in perfect unison.

13. At the school we are at relationships are discouraged and people who are dating are not allowed to hold hands and will be asked to stop going out. Not everyone sticks to this rule!

14. Street vendors came up to you and kept pressuring you to buy things, it was very awkward when you didnt want to.

15. After walking 15 km (10 Miles) along the Great Wall the feeling of elation and exhaustion was incredible.

16. As I returned home, I kept thinking about all the opportunities I had over the past two weeks, and realised how much I would miss it.

17. I will never forget my time in China.
